The 5th graders at Pomaikai has worked in the garden to learn how carbon moves through the environment. They learned that it is stored in plants, fossil fuels, the atmosphere, oceans, soils and the bodies of animals. They know carbon is a natural part of the living planet.
They have also learned there is more CO2 in the atmosphere than the trees are able to take up through photosynthesis. The students decided they could help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide by planting more trees, riding their bikes or walking to school, using alternative energy and recycling and reusing materials.
